Depending on your region, bass may just be starting to come out from their winter depths or already well into spawn. What month is best for bass fishing?Īpril is the best month to fish for bass. ![]() It is caused by changing temperatures in surface waters brought on by the progression of the seasons. Turnover is the gentle, natural mixing of pond and lake waters. It is caused by water temperatures being different at the surface and in the lower regions of a lake. Lake turn over is a phenomenon that generally occurs twice a year, spring and fall. Gases present in the water – especially hydrogen sulfide – cause what is sometimes referred to as a rotten egg-like smell. Do reservoirs smell?Ī certain telltale sign of turnover can be a peculiar smell in waterbodies of all sizes including ponds, tanks and reservoirs. During this process, the bottom layer of water starts shifting to the top – hence the term turning over. It inevitably reaches a point in which it becomes denser than the water underneath, therefore causing it to sink. When the temperatures drop, the top layer of water starts to get colder as well. This unusual characteristic allows water to form distinct layers within an otherwise uniform liquid. In other words, when water reaches the critical temperature of 39 degrees Fahrenheit, further cooling causes the water molecules to become less dense and rise to the surface. The turnover can cause fish kills in some areas, but it is more common on smaller lakes with little moving water or in backwater creek areas where fish can’t escape the water that is lacking oxygen. It makes the water off-colored and even muddy in some areas.
